Abstract

The purpose of the study is to improve current understandings and practices in relation to past and current
interventions as approaches to assisting disadvantaged communities in India. This work will have implications
for policy-makers and practitioners, as well as helping to improve the life circumstances of the individuals and
communities they seek to assist. A key focus here has been to understand why theempowerment models and
how they work, and dont work, to assist rurally located Indian communities. The Structuration model has been
extensively discussed to understand the problem in hand.
